Smart ties up with rural banks

By Riza T. Olchondra
Philippine Daily Inquirer

SMART COMMUNICATIONS INC. said its Smart Money platform now allows clients of the Rural Bankers’ Association of the Philippines (RBAP) to transmit funds via text messaging.

The tie-up will enable rural bank depositors and borrowers to perform financial transactions, including loan disbursement and payments, using the Smart Money platform accessed through Smart SIMs.

The first engagement for the partnership is to accredit the 696 RBAP member banks all over the Philippines as Smart Money Centers, enabling them to convert electronic cash in the Smart Money wallet into physical cash and vice versa. Smart and RBAP also agreed to cooperate in developing additional products and services to address the diverse requirements of rural banks and their customers.

Reynante S. Banico, head of Smart Services Hub, said that with the partnership, RBAP members could reach more than 34 million Smart subscribers, connect to the country’s more than 7,000 automated teller machines, and access more than 100 Smart Wireless Centers and thousands of MasterCard and Smart Money partners across the country and all over the world.

“This partnership with RBAP reinforces our vision of creating communities that are connected and enabled by the robust and pervasive technology of mobile-based solutions,” Smart chief wireless adviser Orlando B. Vea said in a statement.

Smart Money, the world’s first electronic wallet card linked to a mobile phone, won the 2001 3GSM Award for “Most Innovative GSM Wireless Service for Customers.”

RBAP earlier expressed optimism that rural banking would grow 15 percent this year. Rural banks collectively grew their assets more than 15 percent to P161 billion in the first half from P139 billion in the same period last year.

Lexar USB Drives

Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a storage device and is variously called a USB flash drive (UFD). Technically, the industry refers to these devices as UFDs, though consumers are mostly unfamiliar with the acronym, more often using terms like memory stick, thumb drive, or flash drive. They are little storage units that have been fast replacing floppy disks and CD storage.

Lexar USB drives are small, portable device about the size of a BIC lighter or package of gum. The body is an encased circuit board with a memory chip, with one end featuring an integrated USB connector. This connector can slide into a USB port on nearly any computer, making the device ideal for quickly transferring data or programs. USB ports support “plug and play” functionality so that a computer does not have to reboot to recognize the device or to disconnect from it. Modern operating systems also have built-in support for memory sticks, negating the need to load device drivers.

Lexar USB drive has no moving parts and requires very little power. Nearly impervious to casual abuse, the UFD has replaced the less robust floppy drive and a handful of other storage, transfer or backup devices. Memory storage varies according to model, ranging from megabytes (MB) to gigabytes (GB). Light, small and tough, these flash drives are the perfect compliment for any computer user.

There are quite a lot of USB Flash Drives out there having unlikely shapes and characteristics. Multi-functional flash drives seem to get the most attention because they don’t only serve as portable memory storage devices; they also come in a variety of hybrid features. Examples of flash drives that combine data storage with functionality are mp3 players, digital cameras, key chains, writing pens, and other company promotional items.

Many newer motherboards have the option in the BIOS settings to boot from a USB drive. Some flavors of popular operating systems, including a scaled down version of Linux, are designed to work on the USB or UFD. Creating a live drive can be a great way to test out a new operating system without installing it on the computer’s internal hard drive.
Whether backing up data files, archiving programs, or building a portable music library, the Lexar USB drive is a great investment with a humble price tag. UFDs are sold everywhere electronics are sold.

Information in the Tera Era

According to Larry Swezey from Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, the IT industry is moving from the “Information Age” established in 1971 to the current, newly coined “Tera Era”. In the beginning of the Information Age hard drives had a capacity of one gig, and temporary storage (floppies) could be measured in kilo- and megabytes. Since then, how we view, use and store data has changed dramatically. Thanks to the internet and data storage evolution, we have come to expect more data, more quickly and with an array of features, preferably video, but audio will do. Never before have so many people had so much data at their fingertips, and our digital universe just keeps on expanding.

Swezey believes that there are three Cs that intersect at the centre of this data growth phenomenon: Culture, Capacity and Content, and that their collision will create a new world view of data. One consequence of which is a change in language, for instance, we will say goodbye to the gigabyte and make terabyte an IT language staple.

A terabyte is 1000GB, which is enormous. To provide a little perspective, Swezey cites some findings by IDC, a leading market intelligence and research firm. IDC estimates that the volume of digital data in the world is around 2.81 exabytes (EB), which is 2.81 million terabytes (TB), and that was in 2007. Going by volume, 2.81 million TB is bigger than the number of stars in the universe. And if your jaw isn’t on the floor yet, IDC pulls another staggering statistic out of the bag: the amount of digital data in the world will grow by a factor of 10 every five years, which means that in 15 years time, there will be more data on Earth than there are atoms in the universe.
